Before we get into the roles, I learned something this week I wanted to share with you guys.
Last Thursday, I guest lectured to the master's graduates in UX Research at CCAD about my journey in building a creative/marketing business.
The main question that I was asked by these marketing adjacent career types, was some version of almost all of them carrying the same question:
What would it be like to do my own thing?
(By “own thing” I am referring to freelancing, entrepreneurship, consulting, or something similar.)
I told them what I'll tell you. I went out on my own February 1, 2024, after a layoff, and I've shared the whole thing since. The good weeks and the ugly ones. It's been the ultimate self-development experience, and I am truly grateful for it.
If you’re considering this or have always wondered what it would be like to make money in marketing your own way, here are a few things I’d say to help:
Find a mentor.
Someone a few steps ahead who'll be honest with you.
Get in the room.
Peers and mentorship beat going it alone.
Be transparent.
Share the journey, not just the highlight reel.
Post content.
Reps build trust and surface area.
